Trailer calculator: what may your car tow?
The car’s towing capacity and your driving licence must both match the trailer. In addition, the weight limits for the car and the whole combination can restrict it. The calculator helps you keep the figures apart and shows what the result is based on.
Worked example
- Driver's license: B+
- Does the trailer have brakes?: Yes
- Gross vehicle weight of the car: 3,400 kg
- Gross weight of the trailer: 900 kg
- Maximum towing capacity of the car: 4,000 kg
- Actual weight of the car: 3,400 kg
- Actual weight of the trailer: 850 kg
Yes
The combination is within category B+: De konkrete vægte tilsammen er højst 4.250 kg.
Older licenses, other countries and special vehicles are not included. Always check the registration documents. Source: Danish Road Traffic Authority (read 15 October 2026).
Find the figures on the registration certificates
Use the certificates for the car and the trailer. The permitted total weight is not the same as the actual weight on the day you drive. An empty trailer therefore does not automatically change all the limits that the licence rules are based on.
Choose the driving licence category that applies to you. The calculator uses the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s (Færdselsstyrelsen) rules for categories B, B+ and BE in Denmark and shows which rule the result is based on. Older licences, other countries and special combinations require a separate check.
How to use the trailer calculator
Enter the certificate’s figures without mixing them up
Check the names of the weight fields. Do not use the car’s kerb weight in a field for permitted total weight. Also state whether the trailer has brakes when asked.
Remember the weight of the load
Materials, tools and equipment count towards the actual weight. A gravel calculation can give an approximate weight estimate, while weighing gives the actual weight of the loaded trailer.
A result requires the relevant figures. If a key figure is missing, the calculator cannot assess the combination reliably. If in doubt, check the registration details and the current rules with the authority before you drive. The result is not an assessment of load securing or the trailer’s technical condition either.
